fire/fight

By Kai Kenzie Pascal

"We are man’s best friend – and his worst fuckin’ enemy."

The Omnibus Theatre, November 2022
Presented by Unshaded Arts

A building on fire. Two sisters in limbo. Three generations at war.

Written by Kai Kenzie Pascal, fire/fight is an irreverent and incisive study of family (dys)function, working-class politics, grief, and the ultimate betrayal in response to the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire. Fiercely rhythmic and provocative, the play was staged with an incorporation of body percussion and spoken word physicality that asked the question: "What happens when someone / something gets left behind?".

Cast: Maria Yarjah and Jess Pentney
Director: Rebecca Goh
Producers: Hassan Govia and Chiedza Rwodzi

Reviews and Feedback

“Kai Kenzie Pascal’s fire/fight presents another two-hander, as sisters Tash (Mariah Yarjah) and Kel (Jess Pentney) discuss the house fire in which they were both trapped, and the consequences for each of them since. Director Rebecca Goh mirrors Pascal’s writing, laden with metaphor and imagery, with a kinetic quality, pitting the sisters as both wrestling rivals and uneasy friends. The blurring between reality and fantasy leads up to an emotional finale that helps this piece become the standout play of the evening.”
